Symptoms & Complications:

Allergies kick in when your immune system overreacts to normal substances called allergens. Your body releases many chemicals, one of which is called histamine. Histamine is the most abundantly released chemical and is responsible for causing most of your symptoms.

Itchy, watery, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis). --- Airborne allergens come into direct contact with your eyes. Over 80% of people with allergies experience this symptom.
Runny, stuffy nose. --- When allergens enter your nose, your immune system releases a chemical that can make the blood vessels in your nose swell causing them to expand. This allows the fluid to come out into the nose as thin, clear, watery liquid.
Sneezing. --- Your body’s reaction to histamine includes itchiness and swelling inside your nose and throat. As a result, there is irritation of your nasal passage and some obstruction in your ability to breathe through your nose. This will trigger nerves in your nose to send a signal to your brain to which it responds with your sneeze reflex to help clear the irritation or obstruction.

Complications:

Having an allergy increases your risk of certain other medical problems, including:

Asthma. If you have an allergy, you're more likely to have asthma — an immune system reaction that affects the airways and breathing. In many cases, asthma is triggered by exposure to an allergen in the environment (allergy-induced asthma).

Sinusitis and infections of the ears or lungs. Your risk of getting these conditions is higher if you have hay fever or asthma.

Causes:

The following is a list of some of the most common indoor allergens GMI Air Systems can eliminate:

House dust. The allergen that triggers most allergic reactions is the mite droppings. These can collect in pillows, mattresses, duvets, upholstery and carpets. Other common causes of indoor allergies include allergens from animals and from mould spores.
Mould spores. As mould spores float throughout the air there is a high potential for inhalation of these spores to occur in the human body – and this can lead to an array of health risks. Due to the minuscule size of mould spores, they are easily inhaled into the human body and can enter into the deepest recesses of the lungs and even potentially make its way into the bloodstream causing a mold spore allergy. The first initial contact of mould spore inhalation will promote symptoms similar to allergies and overtime progress into more serious health issues.
Dust mites. If you have an allergy to dust mites, you may experience the following symptoms: Persistent coughing. Mucous dripping from the back of the nose to the throat, which is also known as a postnasal drip. Itching, reddened skin.
Cockroaches. Their waste and saliva which contains bacteria can cause food poisoning, diarrhea, and Staphylococcus infections.
Dog & Cat dander. Cat and dog allergens can land on the membranes that line the eyes and nose. Reactions include swelling and itching of the membranes, stuffy nose and inflamed eyes.

Prevention:

General measures to take to prevent allergic reactions includes the following:

Avoid known triggers. Even if you're treating your allergy symptoms, try to avoid triggers as dust mites deposits, dust and vacuum carpets and wash bedding often.
Clean your forced air furnace ducts.
